The NAEP scores are in. Fourth grade reading skills have slipped again! 

What’s not understood is that when these children entered kindergarten, they were less well prepared than previous classes. Today in Wake County there are @20,000 children ages birth to four who are likely to be unprepared for kindergarten. 

The parent is the child’s first and most important teacher! Yet, many parents either don’t know what to do or don’t have time to nurture in ways that lay the foundation for literacy. Schools struggle to help kids make up for what they haven’t learned at home. 

NC READS intends to assist parents and caregivers of infants, toddlers, and our youngest children to become Literacy Champions for their child. 

What is a Literacy Champion? A Literacy Champion tells stories, narrates what they are doing, plays peek-a-book and hide-and-seek. A Literacy Champion listens to and follows the child’s lead with positive, nurturing conversation. A Literacy Champion puts down the phone and focuses on their child.

NC READS comes alongside parents several times each week and provides ideas that promote positive interactions that build their child’s young brain. Conversations build a child’s vocabulary – even though they may not yet talk. Frequent messages from NC READS nudge parents to invest the “next five minutes” in their child…while doing whatever the adult must do.
